O.M. Mykhaylyk, N.O. Dudchenko, I.P. Lubyanova

The forms of nonheme iron in the human body which undergo the most changes with disturbances in iron status are briefly outlined; literature data on nonheme iron indices in the body of healthy adults which characterize body iron stores, storaged iron exchange in ferritin (hemosiderin) pool, in "labile" iron pool or non-transferrin-iron pool, plasma (serum) provision with iron, which are currently in clinical and scientific usage are summarized. The original data on ferritin and transferrin iron concentration, transferrin protein concentration, transferrin saturation, chelatable iron concentration determined in the whole blood and blood cells by the authors of the work using quantitative electron spin resonance technique are also given. The present knowledge on the significance of the indices in the differential diagnosis of anemia and iron overload is represented.
